Many of our dental patients at Roy Dental Care in Roy UT wonder why we still send them home with a complimentary toothbrush and roll of floss.
It’s true, they do seem a little old-fashioned in our high-tech world, but don’t let their simple design fool you. A toothbrush and floss are the best tools for preventing tooth decay, plaque build-up, and gum disease.
Brushing, which should be done at least twice a day, can be done effectively with any type of toothbrush. There is no need to pay a bundle for a fancy electric toothbrush. Just brush your teeth in small, circular motions for 2-3 minutes, making sure to reach all the surfaces.
Flossing should be done at least once a day, and is essential for cleaning the areas a toothbrush can’t reach.
There’s another reason why we give each patient a new toothbrush after a checkup. It’s important to change your brush every three months or so, because bristles wear out. Not only that, bacteria can build up on them. You don’t have to mark your calendar, but keep track of how long you’ve used a brush, and replace it regularly.
